Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do fully functioning e-commerce sites?
My training is illustration / visual communications. I am a Web Designer. I can design a website a website from scratch or model one after other example you have a in mind. If you have an existing site you need updated and given a fresh look or if you need an informative website, a showcase, a gallery... I'm your artist.
I do team up with many talented programmers who can handle any back end programming.

I need a website. Where do I start?

Consider the layout of the website. Is it one long page? Or a number short pages with links?
It helps to layout your website plan in a notebook with each web page on it's own sheet. This will give you a good idea about how complex your site will be.
Please provide links to 3 or 4 websites you like. They don't even have to be related to your industry.
Tell me what it is you like about them (colour, effects, organization, design of banners or buttons). I won't be copying those sites but knowing what you like does provides me with a place to start so that I can create your unique site.

What about Domain Names and Web Hosting?
Before a website can be posted on the web you need a place to park it. You can use Free Web Spaces or purchase your own Domain Name. It depends on how professional you need the web address to look.
You will also need the services of a Provider to host your website. Many companies offer both services or you can purchase these services separately. Prices for these services vary widely. Shop around.
Once you have acquired these services it's important to keep track of your records. Domain Names and Hosting services are contracts for set periods of time. If you let the contract expire someone else could purchase your Domain Name. You will no longer have access to it.

What about a Free Web Space?
There are free web space out there to set up a basic site. But you'll most likely have to share your space with advertisers.
Email accounts often come with free web page space that you can use. Many of the examples in my web gallery are linked to email accounts. If the website is just a link you intend to use for showing individuals your portfolio, the address isn't as important as a catchy URL you want them to remember.
But be wary of the user name:
"http://ca.geocities.com/big_fat_hamster_face22@yahoo.com"
might not be appropriate for trying to sell handmade lace or providing life coaching services.

What files / info must I supply?
Contact info
URL's to any links to other sites
All text that is to be included: About the website / About the person / About the product or service
Any logos or images that are to be used.

What if I want to make changes to my website?

You will have full access to your website files through your Provider's "file manager". Even if you have zero experience with HTML coding scripts you can still easily exchange images and change the text on your website. I will insert:
<!-- *** EDIT Text *** --> or
<!-- *** EDIT Image *** --> where ever appropriate.
Changing the layout of the page is a little more complicated. My services are available on a hourly basis for website updating and additions.

What can the Host do to improve my web with the search engine?
Nothing. All a host does is provide a parking space for your website to sit so that it can be found on the internet.

How do I get to be number one on Google?
Good luck! Everyone is competing for this position. The only way to find your way to rank high in a Google search is to use word combinations that are completey unique and phrases that your target audience are searching for.
