Ballon Ride with the Dog The Silly Hot Air Balloon Race

Location: Toronto, Ontario
About 16 hours

This nursery has a comfortable, nostalgic feeling about it. The theme for this mural was inspired by silly cartoon characters from the 1960s. They are fun without being too baby-ish... easy to grow up with. The colour scheme for the baby's room was drawn from the bedding and other accessories.

Mix and match textile patterns were applied to the hot air balloons drifting around the room. Lots of cool, muted pastels - greens, blues, purples and yellows warmed with touches of orange.

For no rhyme nor reason
It's always a good season
To go sail away
In a hot air balloon

The largest balloons were painted over the crib for a feature wall. The scale of the balloons changes around the room giving them a sense of depth. A frog in marine style military dress and a fiddler have their own airy rides. The captain of this ship has wayed anchor. A deep sea diver descends down from above.

A couple of close-ups: The fiddler looks prepared to play a lullaby over the baby's crib. Froggie in the basket with an umbrella recalls to mind antique tin toys and the whirling clapping noises they would make.

A little village setting near the floor not only gives buoyancy to the balloons above but adds interest at eye level for someone learning to crawl. This mural has been personalized with the helium balloon salesman waving a banner with Baby's name on it.
