The homeowners wanted to soften the look of their room but didn't want fussy, dust-collecting drapery hindering their wooden shutters. The solution: a decorative painting of a faux swag on the wall above the window. This mural is an example of a trompe l'oeil painting, creating the illusion of 3D drapes on a flat wall.
Trompe l'oeil (pronounced 'tromp loi'): A French term meaning "to trick the eye".
The aim is to create an optical illusion by using perspective, shadow, light and scale to deceive the viewer into thinking that they are seeing a real 3D space or object.
