Portrait of a Hallway & Arches

Location: Brampton Ontario
About 30 hours

This mural features a long hallway with assorted decorative arches as seen through a window with a cut stone sill.
The main wall of the first arch has an ornate stylized floral pattern inspired by Persian architectural details.

The home owner had just installed a projection screen for a home entertainment system.
All the furniture had to be moved out of the way to make space for the screen that took up nearly the whole wall when lowered, which created a design delema - a big empty space on a feature wall.

The solution was to fill the space with art but nothing that projected out because the screen was literally right up against the wall.

Below is a mock up I did in
Adobe Illustrator to show how the
tones would create the illusion of depth.

I used a big spindle of black thread and a lot of tape to map out the actual 3D perspective. The home owner joked that it looked like Spiderman had come for a visit.

Sources of inspiration for this project:
Pictures of opular 3D murals that have gone viral on the web.
Images of Persian architecture and the decorative motifs of the Taj Mahal.
The warm colour pallet was drawn from colour scheme of a painting that hangs in the living room.

As opposed to leaving it flat like the top and sides, the shelf at the bottom of the wall opening was a decision that was made towards the end. I seems more inviting, like you could sit on it or climb right into the space.

The plant tucked in behind the first wall helps to describe the space there. And the figure helps to illustrate how big the spce is.

I would have preferred not to have the figure in there at all, it's a portrait of a place, but the homeowner felt it looked lonely. He's the boss.

This is me.
Ok- you caught me looking all glamorous while on the job.
(I photoshopped the paint off my face, arms and clothes!)
