Self-Taught Web Stuff

While at Sheridan we were taught the basics of how to work with Flash and Dreamweaver but it wasn't really the focus of our education.
A lot of the tricks, techniques and understanding of scripts came from exploring the source codes of other websites and from simply asking:
"Oh Great All-Knowing Google! How do I ....?"

Being self taught, I haven't developed the industry lingo but it does have one big benefit - I understand how and why things work. It's more than just a series of steps that achieve one result. It's deciding what I want to have happen and finding a solution for achieving the effect.

RhinoInk Favicon   How to Add a Favicon
A favicon is an image that shows up with your web address and in your bookmarks.
Doesn't work
1. Make 16 x 16 px image and save as "favicon.ico".
2. Upload to the main folder your web files are in.
3. Edit this code:
<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”http://www.yourwebsiteaddress.com/favicon.ico” mce_href=”http://www.yourwebsiteaddress.com.ca/favicon.ico”/>
4. On your index page... Paste the above edited code from step 3 in your HTML head.
Wish the instruction manuals I'd been reading on the web were so easy to comprehend!

I'm Re-Learning Flash

When I was in college it didn't seem so hard. But like everything else, use it or loose it.
Flash was all the rage for a while. I actually find it kind of annoying to visit an exclusive flash site because you can't you can't use normal navigation like the back button (fires you back to the index page). And you can't bookmark individual pages for easy reference. And they take a while to load.
On the other hand, the action and fluidity is beautiful.
I prefer HTML sites with selected areas of Flash. This could be a portfolio, the navigation, advertisements, the header... Looks and Functionality!
