Animal TotemsPaintings of Chainsaw Sculptures Medium: Acrylic paint on stretched canvas This series of paintings was inspired by some folk art, chainsaw log sculptures a relative of mine had carved and has displayed at his cottage. I loved the raw, primitive look of them. The animal totems include a Bear, a Rabbit and a Squirrel. Part of my intention with these paintings was to capture the charm of these wooden creature spirits. My other goal was to create a set of images that were clearly part of a series with a consistent style and colour pallet. I think they have a bit of an "Emily Carr" sort of feeling to them; vibrant with simplified shapes. She painted totem poles too. Singularly, the creatures seem light and cheery but the painting with the Rabbit and Squirrel seems rather ominous to me.
