Left: Woman in a Red Dress with White Rabbit
Above: White Rabbit
Inspired by illustration Friday's word of the week - 'Confined'.
My intention was to illustrate a woman uncomfortably confined in
her clothing. The white rabbit was added as an after thought,
inspired by the Showcase movie "Alice" (in Wonderland).
Makes for a rather ambiguous image. |
This is a technique I've been experimenting with lately. I will spend a lot of time developing a tonal drawing wit graphite pencils, making sure there's a lot of lights and darrks and in between shading. Then I superimpose the drawing over a photograph. I look for images that have a lot of the same tone throughout, like landscapes or sunsets. Having a lot of the same colour unifies the image while a little bit of random, different areas gives my illustrations an unpredictable freshness.

Rhinos Doing the Tango
This illustration was prompted by Illustration Friday's word of the week: TANGO. Considered doing a couple caricatures for the movie "Tango and Cash" but didn't love any of the photos I found. Couldn't think of anything else clever so dancers was it. Plus, it seemed like another good excuse to draw rhinos. Why not?
My favorite part are their horns. The female, getting the shorter, curved horn was a natural decision and it kind of acts like a continuation of the arch of her back (rhinos aren't that flexible). The male, on the other hand, was kind of forced to look that way since I drew him way tooo close to the edge of the page. His ears are laid back because that's the only way I could squeak them in and his horn stretches way out for the same reason. But it all worked out in the end. His expression is perfect and I love the way his horn mimics / frames the females extended leg.
I think, had I had enought room, his horn would have gone almost straight up and that would have looked weird with a tall spindly spike towering over the rest of the weighty composition.

Drifting - Self Portrait (kind of)
Wouldn't it be nice to be drifting on a slow moving river.
The sun warming my skin and the water kissing my fingers and toes.
To just close my eyes and let the current carry me away.
Not to have to worry about what to do and what is due.
A feeling of weightlessness. |
Aerial views make interesting back ground textures for this technique. This one was mostly land with small rivers leading to a larger lake shore. I liked how the blue literally cuts off my head. I think it really adds to the intention of the illustration. Sometimes it's hard to let go of all the little things and just relax. |

Soar - The Pheonix
The bird was rendered without any refence material. In exploring the brain's interpretation of the real world, without any outside influence other than memories, I get to create something that's never existed before. Cool.
Gotta love PhotoShop! The drawing was super imposed with a linear burn effect over a satellite image of a city with a river winding through it.
I could have never planned colours like this. It has a "Native American" feeling to it. |
Lemur
I had this great idea for a company name / logo illustration project... Ghost Lemur Studios. Awesome name! Rolls right off the tongue.
As it turns out, there isn't a species called ghost lemur. Lemur is latin for ghost. Appearently these are sneaky little guys and you don't know they're there until you come nose to nose with one.
I did multiple studies of lemurs so that I could get to know their form better. I then designed some derivative shapes based on what I had learned to create a logo for my ficticious company.

Seeds of Inspiration - A Self-Promotion Piece
I drew a package of flower seeds with a black rhino in full bloom and a baby rhino just beginning to bud. I think it's a terrific idea for a self promotion piece. I'm sure it wold be easy enough to get this printed and turned into actual seed envelopes. I wonder what kind of seeds an art director would appreciate getting in the mail. As long as they don't expect to grow rhinos...! It would be a tactile, visual, olfactory, auditory... sensual experience. Memorable. |
Fairie Cat
A graphite rendering of a cat with butterfly wings. This one was just for fun. I don't usually draw "cute" things. But I am a cat owner. And I do enjoy sci-fi / fantasy reading.
I did a feew other digital experiments with this drawing. |
