Graphic Artists Guild
Hand Book of Pricing & Ethical Guidelines

Speculative (or Spec) Work
Asking potential artists to do a sample illustration in order to be considered for your job, may seem like a good idea - after all, you can very easily compare their styles and skills that way, right?
The problem is, if you go about looking for an illustrator this way, only very inexperienced amateurs will apply. Professional artists do not have time to do a special illustration in the hopes of getting your job, they're far too busy. The only way you could get away with this and get quality candidates is if you were a large company or publishing house - someone with a great reputation who could guarantee a huge paycheck if the artist was chosen for the job - and even then it's not really ethical.

Please visit www.no-spec.com for more information on spec and why illustrators and graphic artists are against it.
