Character Developement

The Burly Gurls moving company and logo.Burly Gurls

This was a project for a new company, an all-female moving company. They wanted a series of characters that showed cartoon women that were serious about their jobs and with distinct personalities.

All the characters have unique female body types.
Olga has a curvy pear shape, Helga is a muscular brick house, Asa is short & stocky and Inga is tall & slim. They are all strong and ready to put in a hard day's work.

The assignment called for 4 individual characters, the 4 women as a group and a logo. You can see a few of the logo concepts here.

Below is a series of sketches I did while determining the look of the women. Got Olga and Inga right of the bat. Helga and Asa required a few kicks at the can.

Demonstrated here is a set of close-ups of Olga tracking her development from scribble to finished illustration, ready to use for promotional material.

Olga sketched in pencil.

Olga was then inked by hand.

Towards the end of the design process the client decided
on some additional details like the 6 on Olga's t-shirt.
No problem - drew them separately and over-laid the new elements in photoshop.

Colour was added digitally. Several colour schemes were tried until just the right combination was determined. The client found inspiration in a picture of wool skeins found on a crafter's website.
